Introduction

Etchingham is a small rural community and Civil Parish in East Sussex, lying in the valley at the junction of the Rivers Dudwell, Limden and Rother, which flow on through Sussex and eventually reach the sea at Rye. The village is situated on the A265 road, which runs from the A21 in Hurst Green, a mile or so to the west, to Lewes in the east. Etchingham has a railway station with direct links to Hastings in the south and London to the North. The '1066 Line' is the local section of the Charing Cross to Hastings mainline. Its Post Office is also a Royal Mail sorting office and the village is also proud of its Grade I* listed parish church which was built in the 14th Century and boasts the oldest brass weather vane in Sussex and probably England.
